Today, modern technology is becoming an integral part of everyday life and the agricultural sector is no exception. This case study presents the use of a smart electric fence to improve the safety and efficiency of sheep farming. It has been several years since we first met with SCHOK representatives to offer them our then new system for remote control and monitoring of electric fences using a mobile phone app. After 4 years of satisfied operation of Smart Farm fencee we met in Zlobice with the director of the Association Ing. Jiří Huml, who shared his experience with us.
Association SCHOK provides all-round support for the effective development of sheep and goat farming and for the promotion of the legitimate interests of its members in relation to the EU institutions, the Czech Republic and local authorities. In the territory of Zlobice, which extends between Kuřimí, Blansko and Tišnov, it owns a complex with several electric fences with a total area of 15 ha. The large farm is home to around 130 animals, among which are mainly Suffolk sheep, a meat breed that can be recognised at first sight by its dark head and limbs. Then there is the South African meat breed, the Boer goat, which is spotted and very photogenic.
A major benefit of the Smart Farm fencee for the Association of Sheep and Goat Breeders is the 24/7 overview of the performance and function of the electric fence, i.e. - in the words of the Association's director Jiří Huml - the so-called standby mode. Monitoring the status of the electric fence and being able to react immediately in the event of a malfunction or problem with the electric fence is a huge plus and contributes significantly to the overall safety for the animals and the large number of passers-by. In the vicinity of the electric fences there is a busy hiking trail and the natural monument Zlobice, which is included in the Natura 2000 system of protected areas due to the presence of many rare plants.
The standby mode with the possibility to deal immediately with unexpected events is always appreciated when the power of the electric fence drops or there is a complete power failure. With Smart Farm fencee, you always know what state your electric fence is in, and if the voltage drops below the set value, you'll receive an alert on your mobile phone and PC.

The electric fences in Zlobice are located on a bare hill with frequent wind gusts, where branches fall on the electric fence wires, preventing animals from leaving the safe area. A warning alert notification in the app will immediately alert you to a break in the electrical circuit. This allows you to react quickly to any problems. "It's a very windy area with the constant problem of branches falling on the fence. Wires torn off the posts are a big threat to escaping animals, who very quickly detect a weakness in the fence. The grass that grows behind the fence is always better."

The growth of vegetation under an electric fence always leads to a gradual reduction in the power output of the fence energizer. The fencee energizers automatically increase the power when the voltage in the electric fence drops from the nominal 33% gradually up to 100% power. The energy DUO RF EDX energizers clearly display the resistance of the electric fence with a graphical representation and the impedance value. This makes it easy to see what condition the electric fence is in and whether the surrounding vegetation is dense enough to need cutting.

These insights show that smart electric fencing can play a vital role in ensuring the safety, comfort and efficiency of sheep and goat farming, which has a positive impact on the animals themselves, the farmers and the overall sustainability of the farm.
There are a total of three conventional pernament electric fences on the SCHOK site, consisting mainly of wooden stakes and steel wires for the electric fence. The smallest pen with goats and one donkey is powered by an energizer energy DUO RF EDX120 with a power output of 12 J. Next to it is a large pasture divided into two electric sheep pens, where the high-performing energizer energy DUO RF EDX150 with a power output of 15 J is installed. As you can see in the photos, each wire row is equipped with an temperature balancing spring to compensate for temperature differences in wire length caused by temperature changes. Due to the use of wooden stakes, the insulators used here are mostly screwed for the electric fence.
